Barring any last-minute surprises before Monday’s transfer deadline, it seems Manchester City have finalized their activity for the summer 2020 transfer window.

In terms of acquisitions, the Sky Blues purchased Valencia’s Ferran Torres. The Spaniard comes in to strengthen Manchester City’s midfield following the departure of club favorite David Silva.

Shortly after, the Sky Blues acquired Bournemouth’s Nathan Aké in order to bolster City’s defense. Aké is a versatile player, where he can fill in as a center back, left back, or central defensive midfielder. Given Aymeric Laporte’s and Benjamin Mendy’s recent injuries spells, Aké should be able to provide coverage for these players. The young Dutchman has already performed well in a handful of games for City at the start of the 2020/21 season.

Most recently, Manchester City purchased Benfica’s Rúben Dias. It is assumed Dias will become the regular alongside Laporte. City have undergone a series of defensive woes following the departure of Vincent Kompany. Is Dias finally the right man for the job?

The Sky Blues also had some departures. The first and most well known was David Silva. The Spaniard’s contract expired this summer, and he has returned to Spain. Silva will now compete with Real Sociedad.

Leroy Sané was sold to Bayern München. The German was expected to sign with Bayern last summer, but an ACL tear prevented him from joining the club. Sané finally joined the German outfit after he overcame his injury spell.

Angeliño returned to RB Leipzig for a second loan following his success with the German club during the second half of the 2019/20 season. Angeliño will remain with the Germans for the duration of the 2020/21 season, where there is also an option to buy the player. The Spaniard previously played for Manchester City before joining PSV Eindhoven, and unfortunately for Angeliño, he was unable to break into the team following his second attempt with the Sky Blues.

Nicolás Otamendi was City’s third departure this summer, where the Argentine signed with Benfica. Otamendi’s move to Benfica was done as part of a swap deal for Dias, although City also had to pay an additional transfer fee for the Portuguese defender.

Some of City’s players were released as well. Claudio Bravo and Ernest Agyiri did not have their contracts renewed, and Bravo now has returned to La Liga with Real Betis.

Finally, several of Manchester City’s young players were sent out on loan. Jack Harrison’s loan with Leeds United was extended. Lukas Nmecha was sent on loan to Anderlecht, where we will be reunited with Vincent Kompany. Yangel Herrera has joined Granada on loan. Paolo Fernandes was sent on loan to Castellon.

Overall, while Manchester City’s transfer activity has not been as exciting as it had been initially anticipated, the Mancunian club has been active. Will City sign any additional players before the deadline day on 5 October? Will anyone else depart the club? Time will tell on deadline day.
