Manchester City Women 3 Chelsea 3
By David Crook
This was a great advert for the Womens game of football, as first played second in an exhilarating display of attacking football.
Manchester City Women knew they had to win. Chelsea knew they had to win. The title sat in the balance and the game was played with commitment and enthusiasm from the outset.
Neither side managed to exert control of midfield, instead the match ebbed and flowed and consequently attackers flourished.
Ellen White opened the scoring, tapping in an excellent throughball whilst doing the impression of someone trying not to give away the fact they were marginally offside.
In what became a pattern, one side took the lead and the other equalised. As each team pegged the other back. Chelsea brought the game level with Ji scoring for the third year in a row against City.
After halftime the pace slowed a little. Georgia Stanway scored the second City goal with a fine run and shot after being released on a counter attack.
Chelsea equalised again and Ellie Roebuck could have done more to keep the ball out. As a free header in the area was almost padded into her own net.
Then came the pivotal moment in the game. Weir was upended in the box and City were awarded a penalty. Stanway stepped up but her shot was saved.
Chelsea went up the other end and scored, taking the lead for the first time in the match. This was a fantastic long range strike by Beth England which swirled in the wind.
It was to their credit that City kept going and the hard working Lauren Hemp was rewarded for her efforts as she slid in the equaliser. City kept trying but could not find the way through.
In the closing stages goalkeeper Roebuck was stretchered off the pitch with what looked like a serious ankle injury just to add to the sombre mood.
This was a great game and City were unfortunate not to win. As it stands the draw is unlikely to be enough, but it is not over until the bitter end.
