Manchester City: Is Sergio Agüero historically underrated?

After becoming the highest overseas goalscorer and recording the most hat-tricks in Premier League history, its a wonder why Agüero is not quickly named as one of the best players in top flight history.

When thinking of the greatest strikers to ever play in the Premier League, for fans of teams other than Manchester City, Sergio Agüero rarely comes to mind. In his distinguished nine year career at the Etihad, he has won just one Golden Boot and made the PFA Team of the Year just twice: 2017-18 and 2018-19.

However, he has scored more Premier League goals than any other foreign-born player, including the likes of Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robin van Persie, and looks well on track to move into the top three of all-time Premier League goalscorers overall. Although he spent the first five years of his European career in La Liga with Atlético Madrid, he has established himself as an absolute Premier League legend, with the best goals per minute (106) of any player in league history.

Yet for some reason, Agüero often is not included in discussions surrounding the greatest players to grace the stage of the Premier League. He’s certainly won enough; he has played a crucial role in all four of City’s Premier League title wins over the last decade and was a key fixture in Pep Guardiola’s domestic-treble winning 2018-19.

In my opinion, because Agüero plays for City rather than one of England’s historically elite clubs, and because of the media slant angered with the way in which City became the country’s best team, he does not receive as much credit as he would have if he had played for United, Liverpool, or Arsenal.

Moreover, because he lives a largely quiet life and is not a massive media presence, he can easily go under the radar, especially in a City side littered with world-class talent. Regardless of his general respect, however, he is loved and adored by City supporters who recognize his role in transforming the team into one of the world’s best clubs.

Agüero may be underrated in the grand scheme of Premier League history, but his impact will last for a generation in Manchester, and he stands alone as City’s top goalscorer and the club’s eternal talisman. English football may not recognize his glittering impact on the Premier League yet, but those in sky blue understand and appreciate the Argentinian’s greatness.
