Manchester City: Our Team of the Decade
By David Crook
As we approach the end of 2019 our thoughts here at Man City Square have turned to choosing the best players we have seen in a Manchester City shirt during the last 10 years.
When we started this exercise we thought that most of the players would in effect pick themselves for the Manchester City team of the decade, but there were some stern tests in making a final selection.
Early on we were troubled initially be the preferred formation. In the last 4 or 5 seasons we have mostly lined up with a familiar 4-3-3 but felt such a tactic limited some of the players we wished to select. Hence, after much debate we decided upon an initial 4-1-3-2 formation.
Of course anyone familiar with the computer game Football Manager would be adept at employing such a line up! This allowed us to shoe horn in two clear attackers but even then created a disagreement – because it rendered our wingers, who have flourished under Guardiola, superfluous.
The achievements of the last 2 years are of course, more recent in our memory and we have tried to guard against a natural dimming of the past exploits.
Let us turn then to focus upon each area of the team to consider some of the debates we had and crucially how we left some key players out of our thinking!
