There are always transfer deals around on deadline day which seem to catch everyone out. It seems Manchester City are about to do that this year.

To say the Manchester City interest in veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson is a surprise is an understatement of almost biblical proportions. You would be hard pressed to find anyone in the world who could have predicted this. There is a better chance of winning the Euromillions lottery jackpot and whilst collecting your winnings being struck by lightening.

Carson is currently 33 years of age and contracted to Derby County in the Championship. He has played an impressive 520 times in his long career since signing professional terms with Leeds United on 1 July 2003. To put that into perspective, he signed for Leeds when Phil Foden was just 3 years of age.

Clearly the interest in Scott Carson is about securing an experienced back up goalkeeper should the need arise. He is unlikely to play many first team games unless there are injuries meaning that in effect he is assuming the “Richard Wright” role at the club.

Wright never played for Manchester City and spent a number of years as a player before joining the coaching staff. I know I fancy I could still undertake this 3rd choice goalkeeper role, where I basically just have to squeeze into a kit and travel on the team bus.

Sources at Derby County have suggested the club will not stand in the way of this dream move for the player in the twilight of his career so it is expected Carson will be announced as a Manchester City player some time today before the transfer window closes at 5pm.

The only potential blot on the copybook of Carson is that he is an ex Liverpool player so expect to see headlines referring to this. The reality is that his association with Liverpool is so long ago many fans will not remember.

Anyway, Carson should be our surprise signing. Unless of course we are doing a deal for Lionel Messi under cover of darkness after all!
