David Silva : Manchester City’s El Capitan
By David Crook
This is going to be another season of wrought emotion for Manchester City fans.
In recent years we have had to endure some notable departures from the Manchester City playing squad as many of the first wave of our modern time have begun to move on to pastures new.
At the end of Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge at Manchester City on 1 July 2017 our warrior full back Pablo Zabaleta left and signed for West Ham United. This was the first in a series of emotionally charged player departures because Zabaleta had risen as had our club and came to signify the heart of our team.
On 30 June 2018 Yaya Toure left Manchester City and moved initially to Greece. His signing had played a large part in igniting our modern era at the club, with his goals sparking our side out of the slumber of a prolonged trophy drought. Of course his antics off the pitch through his agent Demitry Seluk probably ensured that for many fans his departure was not mourned.

At the end of this last season our Captain – Vincent Kompany – left the club heading to Belgium to launch his managerial career. Quite how we will be without our de facto leader on the pitch remains to be seen but as we start to try and come to terms with his loss, then another larger gap begins to appear on the horizon.
David Silva will leave Manchester City at the expiry of his current contract on 30 June 2020. He has decided to leave City after a decade with the club and his quiet dedication and sublime skill have been an ever present in the renaissance of our fortunes.
The hole he will leave in our team will be immense and we can but hope others will step into the void – Phil Foden hopefully. These last 11 months of Silva will give us one final chance to show our appreciation for the little magician.
It would seem that Manchester City have decided to reward Silva and honour him for this last season by giving him the role of Club Captain, following the departure of Vinnie. Silva is expected to undertake this role for the year ahead and hopefully will get the chance to lift some silverware next year!
We have a year to now to prepare ourselves for the departure of Silva so we best get started. We better get used to the emotional fall out of losing our star players because on 30 June 2021, Sergio Aguero will leave too. And that really will mark the end of Phase 1 of Manchester City’s rebirth!
