Rather than picking a single Player of the Season, Man City Square have decided to focus on those players who have made the biggest contributions to our remarkable 2018/19 season.

Bernardo Silva

Those two words are probably synonymous with our breath taking season. As fans there tends to always be songs associated with particular seasons and this year it has been the unbridled joy with which we have sung the name of Bernardo that sticks in the mind. His performances have been electric.

Bernardo plays football in the way I wished I could. He has oodles of ability, just to appreciate his childhood nickname of ‘bubblegum’ is to understand quite how good his close ball control is. Coupled with that though are two things which make him really stand out.

Firstly, he has an unbridled, infectious enthusiasm for playing. It is as though he just wants to always be on the pitch with the ball at his feet. He never hides and he never gives up.

Secondly, he has the best ‘engine’ I have ever seen in a football player. The distance he covers in every match is unbelievable. He is simply relentless with his running. This underpins our style of play as ball recovery is so important.

Whilst I tend to think of Bernardo as the natural successor to David Silva in the middle of the park, Pep has tended to deploy him wide on the right.

This has usually been to provide us with some tactical flexibility as well as to make use of his defensive duties on the wing.

In our fourmidable Premier League season he made 36 appearances and was in the starting eleven 31 times. In the Premier League alone he scored 7 times and made 8 assists.

His total record for the 2018/19 season is impressive. He made 51 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and assisting 14 more.

At just 24 years of age and under contract until 30 June 2025, we have a number of years still to look forward to with our little Bernardo.
