The Premier League transfer window opens on 16 May and the likelihood of City receiving a transfer ban in the short term is receding. Consequently there are increasing numbers of stories beginning to appear in the media.

Manchester City fans may want to look away now and put their fingers in their ears! Stop the clocks because this news is not something any of us will want to hear!

Leroy Sane, fan favourite and speedy winger – an essential part of our attack which has reaped dividends under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, is reportedly in talks with Bayern Munich over a summer transfer.

Sane joined Manchester City from Schalke FC in Summer of 2016 and was a raw but little known attacking talent. The transfer package was a surprising £45 million in total and it was this fee which caused Bayern Munich to baulk at the asking price and drop any interest they had at that point.

Upon joining City, Sane was secured to an initial 5 year deal which is due to expire in June 2021.

Since joining, Sane has had an explosive impact at City and this has in turn helped him to become the poster boy of German football. Following his transfer to City, Sane made a total of 37 appearances and scored 9 goals and assisted a further 8. It was in 2017/18 that he reached prominence as an essential part of our attacking threat when he played a total of 49 times, scoring 14 goals and assisting 19.

There followed a summer of disappointment for Sane as he failed to make the German World Cup Squad and had his application questioned by the German captain. The tough love continued into 2018/19 as Sane saw his role in the team diminished, allegedly in part because of a failure to follow fully the defensive duties ascribed by Pep.

Even so his statistics for 2018/19 still make good reading – 46 appearances in all competitions with 16 goals and 18 assists.

Rumours have persisted for some time that Leroy had not accepted any of the contract offers which were made by City as we attempted to convince him to commit his long term future to our club, like many of his colleagues have already done.

According to the story in the Daily Record today ,City have reluctantly given permission for Sane to negotiate with other clubs. It appears from this story that City are unwilling to let Sane run down his existing deal so have no option to sell him.

The journalist behind this story is Duncan Castles, much maligned by City fans for his support of Mourinho. However, Castles is well connected with super agent Jorge Mendes and has a good track record at breaking transfer stories.

Bayern Munich were interested before and have clear space in their squad given players like Arjen Robben are moving on. Signing the poster boy of German football would be a significant coup for Bayern and may well allow them to cement their domination at the top of the League for years to come.

Of course, for this story to come to fruition it will probably require a significant transfer fee to be paid by Bayern which may yet prove to be a stumbling block. So there is still time for City fans to hope Sane has a change of mind and signs a new deal.
