Man City Square look ahead to a weekend where Manchester City play two Cup Finals in consecutive days.

Maybe Cup Finals are like buses after all. I spent most of my life following Manchester City where appearances at Cup Finals were as rare as a bear’s egg. I remember that League Cup Final of 1976 and the defeat in the FA Cup Final in 1981 and then the desert which lasted until 2011. Between the ages of 10 and 45 I never saw my team win anything other than promotion from a lower league (that was still great by the way!)

Now I find myself in the curious position of going to see City play in two different Cup Finals this weekend. Firstly on Saturday the Manchester City Women’s team is playing in the Continental Cup Final against Arsenal. The match kicks off at 12.15 and is taking place at Sheffield United’s ground – Bramall Lane. It will be shown on live TV in the UK on BT Sport. There is an added frisson to this match because my daughter will be one of the player escorts and will accompany the team onto the pitch!

More from Domestic Cups

The Continental Cup Final should be a good game and will be a closely contested match as the two top sides in the Womens football game go up against each other. It is a reply of the final from the previous year when Arsenal ran out 1:0 winners to take the trophy from the defending champions.

On Sunday the action moves to Wembley stadium as the City Men’s team take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final which kicks off at 16:30 and is being televised across the world. City have the chance to retain a trophy for the very first time in their history and the importance of being able to win silverware in February cannot be underestimated. A win will help to galvanise our momentum and may help to see us over the line in the months ahead.

So it seems a long way from growing up as a City fan – enduring 35 years without a major honour – and now facing the exciting prospect of two Cup Finals in two days!
