Newport County 1 Manchester City : Player Ratings
By David Crook
Man City Square reviews the Manchester City player performances in the FA Cup game away at Newport County and tries hard to select a Man of the Match.
Goalkeeper and Defenders
Ederson
This was an excellent performance on a difficult pitch where Ederson looked a class above. Lost control once but retrieved the ball well and almost turned the mistake on its head and crafted a chance. As cool as a cucumber. Made one great save where he pushed the header past the post from close range.

Danilo
A fairly solid return to the first team for the first time since the Newcastle game. Unlikely to see a well struck shot hit the post and a couple more rebound around in the 6 yard box.

John Stones
Swept up well and moved into midfield once Fernandinho was withdrawn. Looks solid in the pass and read the game well.
Player Rating 7
Nicolas Otamendi
Exactly what we needed on the pitch. Seemed to relish the challenge of the battle. Won just about every single duel.
Player Rating 7
Oleks Zinchenko
Looking better with each game. Maybe we do not need another left back after all? Linked up well with Sane when they have spent so many other games running into cul de sacs.

The Midfield
Fernandinho
Imperious display. He snuffed out chances as they came and the one time Ederson got into difficulty he nipped in to quell any panic. He reads the game so well.
Player rating 7
David Silva
Controlled and important game from our trusted leader on the pitch. Sad to say he is beginning to look as though the years are creeping up on him.
Player Rating 8
Phil Foden
Invisible for much of the first half to the extent I was hoping he was substituted. In the second half he broke into action and created two goals for himself.
Player Rating 9
Attackers
Leroy Sane
Kept going even though there was some carelessness but he hits his shots so well that he gives goalkeepers no chance.
Player rating 8
Gabriel Jesus
Not involved in most of the match.
Player Rating 6
Riyad Mahrez
His performance was rescued by the goal because otherwise this was below par.
Player Rating 6
Substitutes
Ilkay Gundogan
Not enough time to mark.
Player Rating 7
Aymeric Laporte
Not enough time to mark.

Man City Square Man of the Match
With a brace of goals this game belonged to Phil Foden who did no harm to his growing reputation and seized his moment to show the world he may be the best English footballer of his generation.
