As the famous Manchester City fan song says “Here’s to you Vincent Kompany, City loves you more than you will know”

Manchester City have been through a tremendous transformation since the takeover by Sheikh Mansour 10 years ago and at the centre of it all has been Vincent Kompany. Signed on 22 August 2008 for £8.5 million from Hamburger SV, as a defensive midfielder/centre back, Kompany has found himself at our Club for over 10 years.

He has found rapid improvements in the playing squad during his time at the club and it is to his credit that he has taken advantage of the opportunities he has been offered and leapt at the chance to develop into one of the best centre backs in world football.

It is with sadness that his impressive form for Manchester City where he has been an inspirational figurehead has been curtailed following a succession of injuries. I tend to think of Kompany as the player who scored that key goal at Old Trafford on our way to our first Premier League title back in 2011/12 – a defining moment in our history as we earnt a right to compete on the pitch with the very best players in the world.

The bravery and determination shown by Kompany as he has sought to return not only to playing football but to being a great player has been inspirational to many – and it is this heart and commitment which has helped to endear him to City fans all over the world. Of course it has helped that he has married a Manchester woman and settled into the area too – the fans consider him to be one of our own.

Injury has robbed us of seeing Kompany regularly in his prime and he continues to carefully manage his fitness to enable him to have any chance of playing. He has made less than 100 appearances for City in the last 4 years but nevertheless his performances have continued to be immense.

Kompany’s existing contract with City expires on 30 June 2019 and he has been free to talk to foreign clubs since January regarding signing a pre contract agreement with them. City fans have been keen to ensure he stays at the Club believing he continues to be an important figurehead. But there have so far been few indications a new deal could be struck given his current ongoing injury problem which renders him unavailable for selection.

However signs have emerged today that a new deal at Manchester City would appear to be close to agreement and will be announced soon. Journalists close to Manchester City have started to report today an agreement has been reached on a 12 month extension to his deal which would see a reduction in wages based on playing time.

This is Kompany’s testimonial year and there is a plan for a series of events to be held which will all raise money to support a initiative to alleviate the homelessness crisis in Manchester. part of this appears to relate to a planned testimonial game which will now take place in August and will see a Manchester City XI take on a team invited by Kompany.

So as a City fan it is good news all round about Kompany extending his stay with us. If Kompany does know how much the fans love him then it would be just perfect to make the announcement on valentines day!
