The 2018/19 Premier League Season is shaping up to be a battle between Manchester City and 4 Other clubs. We look at how these top 5 clubs have fared so far this season against each other and what this may tell us about the games which lie ahead.

Looking at the performances of the Top 5 clubs on the eve of the defining game between Manchester City and Chelsea is strangely illuminating. By the end of match day 16 all of the Top 5 will have played against each other  4 times.

Manchester City will have played 4 games against the Top 5 – all of which by some strange fixture listing computer algorithms, have all been away from home. By contrast Arsenal will have played 3 of their 4 games at home.

More from Man City Editorials

Arsenal have lost to Manchester City 0:2 at home, drawn 1:1 with Liverpool and beaten Spurs 4:2. Away from home Arsenal have lost to Chelsea.

Spurs have lost to Manchester City at home and Liverpool at home. They were beaten by Arsenal away and their solitary victory against a Top 5 club came in their 3:1 win over Chelsea. It is fair to say that Wembley is not looking like a fortress for Spurs.

Liverpool have only faced Manchester City at home where both sides shared a 0:0 draw. Away from home Liverpool have drawn against Chelsea and Arsenal and won against Spurs.

Chelsea have beaten Arsenal at home, drawn away to Liverpool and lost away to Spurs.

Manchester City have drawn 0:0 at Anfield against Liverpool but have so far secured away victories against Spurs and Arsenal. In fact City have quiet;y developed an excellent away record in London, having not lost since the FA Cup Semi Final against Arsenal in April 2017.

So what does this tell us? It means that Manchester City will have faced all of the top 5 clubs away from home by matchday 16, which may afford us a slight advantage. If we can achieve a win against Chelsea then the advantage is greater.

Arsenal and Spurs have not yet been rigorously tested away from home in the Premier League against other top 5 clubs and could find those games more challenging, it will certainly test their style of play.

The mini Top 5 Table would so far look like this:

  1. Manchester City Played 3 Won 2 Lost 0 Drawn 1 Points 7
  2. Liverpool               Played 4 Won 1 Lost 0 Drawn 3 Points 6
  3. Chelsea                 Played 3 Won 1 Lost 1 Drawn 1 Points 4
  4. Arsenal                 Played 4 Won 1 Lost 2 Drawn 1 Points 4
  5. Spurs                     Played 4 Won 1 Lost 3 Drawn 0 Points 3

Indicating that so far games between the Top 5 Clubs have pretty much gone according to form.

Let us hope that City can continue to perform at their current level and secure a victory away to Chelsea. That will leave us with a run in against the Top 5 clubs all at home where they will all have to come to the Etihad to try and get a result.
