Manchester City v Southampton Player Ratings
By David Crook
Manchester City played Southampton on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium and ran out 6:1 winners after a very good performance of scintillating attacking football.
ManCitySquare reviewed the performance of the players during the game and awarded the following ratings:
Ederson
Ederson made several really good saves during thew game and his distribution and passing was on point as usual. There was one particular moment where he sold Danny Ings a dummy inside his own 6 yard box. He did give away a penalty though.
Rating 7
Kyle Walker
There was a moment early in the first half when he was clattered by a Southampton player and almost immediately sought retribution which for a moment left me fearing another red card like against Everton at home last season. It did not happen though and Walker controlled his temper. Offered a useful outlet at all times and there was some neat play with the wingers.
Rating 8
Benjamin Mendy
Moving upfield and Mendy is a dream, he appears as an extra winger, overlapping and cutting inside. On the backfoot though and he can be caught out. Playing such a high line is liable to cause some issues as teams seek to exploit the space behind, but too many of his interceptions are missing. Right now he just needs more game time to fine tune.
Rating 7
Aymeric Laporte
Extended his unbeaten run of games in the Premier League to 20 and looked assured throughout. Some of his long passes from the left are exquisite. Was lacking in concentration at a couple of key moments and needs to do better at that.
Rating 7

John Stones
Really settling into his role and duties and looking more assured with each minute on the pitch. Good reading of the game today to restrict Southampton despite their running.
Rating 7
Fernandinho
Producing the kind of displays which are likely to be training videos for young players for years to come. Fully engaged and committed. No tactical fouling.
Rating 8
David Silva
Industrious display from El Mago who sashayed around finding space in impossible places. A lovely strike for the goal.
Rating 9
Bernardo Silva
Has an incredible engine and ran himself into the ground with boundless enthusiasm. Rapidly becoming my new favourite player.
Rating 9
Leroy Sane
He toyed with the Southampton defence at times, accelerating and twisting and turning into impossible spaces. At least twice he cut the ball back from the byline only to find no one else had made the run. Tracked back too.
Rating 9
Sergio Aguero
Aguero has matched his goalhanging instincts with a workrate which is a joy and today this benefitted his colleagues as he turned creator. The best striker in the Premier League.
Rating 9
Raheem Sterling
Goals and assists. Top. Of. The. League.
Rating 10
Substitutes
Vincent Kompany
Stepped on the pitch to shore us up in the last minutes. Looked assured.
Rating 7
Fabian Delph
Filling in for Fernandinho may be the new Delphino. Good display.
Rating 7
Phil Foden
Does not look out of place as he replaced David Silva. Unlucky not to have added a goal.
