Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne Substituted Against Fulham Following Injury

Kevin De Bruyne is Manchester City’s talisman; our iconic player, one of the current best players in World football. His hectic run of football in recent seasons ended with a serious knee injury sustained in training during August. Tests confirmed he had a knee ligament injury and it was believed he would be out of action for 6 to 8 weeks. The good news at the time was Dr Ramon Cugat, Pep Guardiola’s specialist surgeon in Barcelona, considered no surgery was required.

Kevin De Bruyne has just started to return to first team action in the last 10 days having fully recovered from his injury. Appearances against Shaktar Donetsk and Tottenham away saw him steadily return to full fitness. Last night against Fulham he began to deliver the performances we have come to expect, as he exerted complete authority over the midfield.

De Bruyne made over a hundred passes in the game, made a series of critical passes and interceptions. He tackled the opposition players and looked to be getting back to his very best. He motored around the pitch, chasing and closing down the opposition. The play of Gabriel Jesus saw De Bruyne often as the player furthest forward in attacks.

However in the 85th minute of the match he was involved in a clash with Timothy Fosu-Mensah. De Bruyne was already at full stretch laid on the pitch when the Fulham player fell onto him. The clash seemed to cause an impact to De Bruyne’s right knee, and there appeared to be some form of hyper extension of the right knee in the incident.

De Bruyne was substituted and immediately went down the tunnel to receive medical attention. It was clear at the time in the interaction between De Bruyne and Guardiola that the player feared the worst.

Manchester City have confirmed this morning that De Bruyne has suffered further knee ligament damage but the initial view appears to be he will require a 4 to 6 week injury lay off, ruling him out of all matches until early December. This is a significant blow to both Manchester City, and especially De Bruyne who must now undergo a further period of rehabilitation.

If there is any good news in this story it is that his most recent injury from which he has just returned was his left knee so the blow yesterday was to a different leg. So it will not have caused a recurrence to that injury. De Bruyne has had an unlucky start to this season but we all hope to see him back as soon as possible.
