The Busy Christmas Schedule

In a little over 11 days the Premier League squeezes 4 matches into the traditional TV schedules.  Whilst City Match Going fans still bemoan the impact of the TV channels – seemingly continually moving games at short notice, it’s fair to say the money they bring to our beautiful game probably gives them the right. I think whilst acknowledging the right of the TV companies to schedule games what we rally against is the relative lateness of the game picks, why can’t it all be decided before the season kicks off? That way at least we can take advantage of cheaper train fares in advance.

This Christmas City fans have been left with a boxing day game still but nothing is scheduled for New Year having had their clash against Liverpool moved for TV into a Thursday night slot. Let that sink in a moment. When did playing on  a random Thursday evening in the typical English winter weather seem like a good idea? Whilst it may fill a small gap in the TV schedules between Indiana Jones and Only Fools and Horses, its hardly an exciting prospect for any match going fans. Dragging us away from work – because the reality is that by the 3rd January we will all be back at work, not that will trouble the Liverpool fans, who in my experience are made up of the great unwashed and the Norweigan.

The first of the festive games takes place on 21 December. As is the wont of the TV companies games are spread over several days so I am going to use the language of the TV companies here to try and break things down and talk about – match days. The matchdays are a a series of games (of soccer) spread over a couple of days to squeeze the TV audience into submission.

The festive matchdays start on Match day 18
