With the season over, it is time now where every side look at their squad. Preparing for next season and, in the case of Manchester City, defending of the title and pushing on in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola, and the Chairman himself, has stated that the Blues don’t feel the need to go in for a huge number of people. This transfer window, and windows moving forward, City are most likely to be adding just one or two quality additions.

In his end of season interview, Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarek made clear that the club had learned from their previous title defences. Neither season following the title wins under Mancini nor Pellegrini were anything great.

The summer of 2012 saw the purchase of Jack Rodwell, Maicon, Javi Garcia, Scott Sinclair and Matija Nastasic.. None of those names really pushed or challenged that title-winning current squad. In fact, many were only signed as backup, and it showed as many moved on without leaving any lasting memories.

2014 was just as poor. Wilfried Bony, and Eliaquim Mangala were shipped in along with Fernando. Willy Caballero and Bacray Sagna were probably the pick of the bunch. So it is vital that the players coming in this summer play a bigger role.

Names being mentioned to come in is Riyad Mahrez (Leicester) and Jorginho (Napoli). With the latter, a deal could be concluded very soon. The player’s agent has indicated that the Italian would be keen on a move, once the clubs agree a fee.

If reports are to be believed, there is still quite a gap between both parties valuation of the player. An option of throwing a player in has been talked about, and Zinchenko was previously on Napoli’s radar.

However, Napoli have recently changed their manager, with Carlo Ancelotti moving into the seat vacated by Maurizzio Sarri. Could he convince the player to stay? Is he even in the plans of the new Italian manager?

We will certainly know more towards the end of this month when the player’s agent will  be in Naples to meet with the hierarchy. From there we should know several things quite quickly. We should know if Manchester City have made a bid for the player and, more importantly, we will know if Napoli are open to a sale.

From there, if everything is positive, we could see a deal wrapped up quite quickly. Pep is adamant on concluding the majority of the major business before the World Cup gets into its flow. Last season, Kyle Walker,Mendy, Danilo and Ederson were all signed and done by July 24th, although remember the window was different from now.
