Catalyst For The Season:

The good thing about this competition is that it can give the winners a boost for the remainder of the season. When City won it for the first time in 1970, they went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup soon after.

For Pellegrini in 2014 a 3-1 victory in this competition was followed up by the League win. Two years later, when Manuel’s side were victorious against Liverpool, City didn’t win the League. City did however get to the Semi Final of the Champions League, a single goal halting their journey.

It’s not just City though, United won it last season and went on to lift the Europa League. Chelsea, in 2015 won the trophy, then the title. Will this be a sign for the Blues to go on and win more? Certainly the Premier League is assumed to be all but done, so Champions League?
