When Spaniard David Silva was not included in the match day squad for the game against Tottenham, a few eyebrows were raised. And when Kevin DeBruyne scored City’s second and celebrated with showing ‘two’ and ‘one’ fingers those became eyebrow raises turned into questions to be asked.

To Manchester City’s great credit, and for the press and wider footballing world to be honest, the response of ‘personal reasons’ was accepted. I do not remember too many press conferences in which Pep was pushed on the reason for the absence.

In Spain, the press were similarly respectful. Confirming he was there in Spain, but very little more. Rotation meant he wasn’t expected to take part in the Carabao Cup fixture, but did take part in the following League game.

After that game, a home fixture against Bournemouth, he was away once more. Back for the game against Watford, and a statement from David himself was released via Twitter.

After the game Pep stated that David Silva is free to come and go as is needed, which is fantastic to hear. Family is always more important than football, and to have that support from your manager must be good.

Even some players from rival clubs took to social media to show support to David and his family. One of the first to post something after the initial statement from Silva, was Gary Neville.

"“I can’t think of many players from a rival club that have been a credit to the game on and off the pitch as much as David Silva”, before continuing “(Silva) Immersed himself in the city, never complains, always plays and performs brilliantly.”"

Even Michael Carrick sent a message in the New Year. After what was a Manchester derby in which tensions boiled over somewhat only back in early December, he too showed class, contacting Silva via Twitter.

"“Some things are much more important than football. All the best to you and your family David, especially to your little man.”"

To say I haven’t been a fan of either player wouldn’t be an understatement, other than when Gary fed the Goat back a decade or so ago. However, I think their statements, when they didn’t actually have to say anything, certainly shows that maybe the Red side also have players (and ex players) who are a credit to the game, on and off the field.
