The European journey started with a play-off round for the ‘Mighty’ reds. A 2-0 aggregate victory over LKS Lodz, a Polish side.

In the Group stage they would face Bayern Munich and Barcelona along with Brondby. A pretty tough group, which United managed to get out of in second place, at the expense of Barcelona.

Back then there were only six groups, with the top side of each going through. Another two, the best second placed sides, also progressed, which is where United made the grade.

Of course, that meant straight into the Quarter Final stage, where Unted met Inter Milan. Winning the first game, at Old Trafford 2-0 they came away from the San Siro with a 1-1 result, and progression. The Semi Final was similar as United would again face an Italian side.

This time it was Juventus. Only getting a draw at home in the first leg United did go to Italy and come back with a 3-2 win, 4-3 on aggregate to set up the Final against Bayern Munich. A goal down heading into injury time, Sheringham and Solskjaer scored to turn the deficit around.
