The League Cup campaign was non existent that season with United bowing out in December, just like this season. That season it was to a Tottenham side rather than Bristol City, with ex Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham, scoring United’s only goal.

In the FA Cup, United did go all the way. Home ties throughout helped I am sure, although there were some tough opponents on the way to Wembley.

Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Fulham were all dismissed at Old Trafford. Chelsea, in round six, actually took United to a replay at Stamford Bridge before letting United past.

Arsenal also took United to a replay in the Semi Finals, both of which were at Villa Park, before Ferguson’s side progressed. Facing, and beating, Newcastle in the Final.
