Future

So the question we have to ask is, does Kompany have a future past this season at Manchester City? Or would the team be better off moving on? The player’s contract appears to run out in 2019, unless he is extended, making this summer a crucial deciding-point in the Belgian’s career at City.

The club will not want to let him leave on a free, so the most likely scenarios involve Vinny being sold this summer, or being given a two-year extension of sorts. But with a continuing inability to make it onto the pitch, and wages of €120,000 per week, Kompany’s spot in the squad going forward is certainly not guaranteed.

"Most recently, Manager Guardiola spoke out on the speculation surrounding Kompany, stating in a City press conference “I think he has all the qualities,” “[b]ut, of course, many things we train a lot of times he wasn’t involved.”"

Guardiola’s statements certainly quell some of the immediate unease around Kompany’s future in Manchester, but they are not an absolute.

No matter what happens with Kompany this summer, whether he regains his health and stays with the team for the future, or ends up moving on, he is a City legend forever, and injuries will never touch his legacy.
