Past

Vincent Kompany was a destined footballer from a very young age, starting out with the Anderlecht academy in Brussels, Belgium. He entered their youth academy at the age of only six, eventually moving up into the first team, where he remained until twenty years old.

At only age seventeen Kompany was already a fairly sought after commodity, with reports stating that several top European teams were interested in signing him from Anderlecht. Kompany was excellent for his home club, winning the league twice with them, and Belgian Young Professional Footballer of the Year twice. The club was able to hold onto Vinny for three more years before he made a switch to German Bundesliga side Hamburger SV for a reported €10.5 million.

The Belgian would stay at Hamburg for only two seasons before making a move to Manchester City in early 2008. Kompany’s fee was undisclosed, but whatever it reasonably could have been (€8 to €10 million rumored), City certainly got the better end of the deal.
