With the new season beginning on Saturday for Manchester City, we take a look at the top 5 defenders within the City ranks.

Defense has been an area highlighted for improvement after the last campaign under Manuel Pellegrini and it has been noted by many that if these problems in defense can be rectified, the Premier League title will undoubtedly be heading to the blue side of Manchester.

Jason Denayer

The young Belgian is full of talent and it’s a surprise to most Manchester City fans that he hasn’t had a sniff of first team football any earlier. At the age of 22, you get the sense of it’s now or never for Denayer in a City shirt and he really needs to impress Guardiola soon if he is to gain any chance of playing top flight football next season. However, his defensive abilities should be enough to make enough of a claim for first team football. The Belgium international has impressed during previous loan spells at Celtic and Galatasaray respectively and his ability to play out from the back will make him more and more attractive to new coach Guardiola.
