With the new season rapidly approaching and Manchester City being uncharacteristically conservative in the Summer Transfer Window so far, it appears that one of the only major targets of the club is Raheem Sterling.  City has been given the green light to spend this Summer and many expected the club to do this with reckless abandon.  However, the only addition to the club thus far has been 18-year-old Turkish striker, Enes Unal.  Sterling would be a blockbuster signing for the club, but here are three reasons why City should pass up on the Liverpool star.

More from Man City Editorials

1. Raheem Sterling is not a £50 million player

Certain players demand excessive contracts.  Players that consistently deliver goals like Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez are priceless for a club.  Playmakers that make their teammates better and constantly create chances like Lionel Messi are invaluable for a team.  Rock-solid center backs that make it impossible to score against are worth every penny.  Then there is Raheem Sterling.  The player is incredibly quick and strong in possession.  However, he never broken double digits in either goals or assists in the Barclays Premier League.  He is young and homegrown and could develop into a star.  But right now, he is nowhere near a £50 million player.

2. His position is not an area of need for the club

When you think about Manchester City, you think of pace.  With speedsters like Jesus Navas, Sergio Aguero, and Gael Clichy, speed is not lacking at the Etihad.  Sterling delivers quickness in abundance, but City doesn’t lack it.  Sterling would be an upgrade over a player like Jesus Navas, but not a massive upgrade that deserves an enormous fee.  Sterling would be a nice addition, but not a necessary one.

3. He is not a true professional

To invest heavily in a 20-year-old, the club needs to be sure that the player can be relied upon for years to come.  Nothing in Raheem Sterling’s past would give Manchester City confidence.  The player has publicly criticized a contract that he agreed to, during the season.  The player has been photographed smoking from a shisha pipe and inhaling nitrous oxide, according to The Daily Mail.  Now, Raheem Sterling has refused to take part in training ahead of Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia.  The player is reportedly sick and has missed the first two days of training.  However, ESPN FC reports that Sterling had made it clear that he did not want to take part in Liverpool’s pre-season tour before training had even started.  What in Sterling’s past gives City the confidence that they will not be in a similar position in a few years time if they acquire the services of Raheem Sterling?
