The Transfer Strategy

The fact Manchester City post CAS judgement may have over €300 million in their transfer kitty is likely to cause much outrage in the media in coming months. Of course there are two things the detractors may have overlooked as they feverishly type in anger.

Firstly, City were prepared to spend big last summer for a central defender but refused to meet the valuation from Leicester City for Harry Maguire, believing £80 million was excessive. Those funds have sat waiting for the right moment to spend and that time appears to be now.

Secondly, City may have even more money to spend if they add further sales. The money from the Leroy Sane could be bolstered with sell on clauses from Jadon Sancho as well as potential sales of fringe players such as John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Suddenly that €300 million could become €400 million and it is certain that other English teams which currently hold the record spends on goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers may all cry foul play.

So, in a transfer market where many clubs are struggling to stay afloat, City could be about to commit a statement spend. But which positions are City looking to strengthen? We turn next to look at potential targets.
