The Surprise in the starting line up was that Phil Foden started a major Cup Final, after having made relatively few appearances in recent weeks. So, when all the pre match focus was upon Jack Grealish, suddenly Phil Foden reminded us all of his immense talent.

Too often there are too many plaudits for players who are little more than average. And amongst the whole wood it can be difficult to spot the trees. Yet, Foden threatens to rise from all of this as a genuine generational talent.

Whilst his development has been carefully stage managed by Pep Guardiola so far, there are increasing calls for more game time for Foden. This is all especially important as Gareth Southgate is selecting players for England Friendlies in the run up to Euro 2020 this coming Summer.

So, Foden found himself on the big stage in front of the worldwide TV audience watching the Cup Final and proceeded to turn in a Man of the Match display. His deftness of touch, his skill on the ball and his vision were all outstanding.

Right now, Foden looks to be the real deal and Southgate should be putting him down on the team sheet.
