Manchester City: Player ratings in big win over Aston Villa
Defense
Ederson (GK): Had very little to do in this match, and Villa’s only goal was not his fault as it came late on from the penalty spot. He dove the right way but was beaten by a fantastic strike, but was ultimately denied the clean sheet. (6)
João Cancelo (RB): Showed real drive going forward and looked just like the player City signed this summer. He is a weapon in attack, and if he can’t unseat Kyle Walker at right-back, he should get an opportunity opposite him on the left. (7.5)
John Stones (CB): If he can keep up this form and confidence, he will be the perfect partner when Laporte returns to the side. (8)
Fernandinho (CB): Played admirably once again, and kept Villa out for the entirety of the time he was on the pitch. (7)
Benjamin Mendy (LB): A much more encouraging performance going forward, looking more dangerous in the attacking third while defending well as part of the City unit at the back. (7)
