Who are the Premier League Title Contenders?

There’s three teams left that we haven’t talked about yet. Let’s get to the three clubs that figure to be Premier League title contenders.

Liverpool

Liverpool are coming off what might be the most devastating of their runner-up finishes in the Premier League era.

Despite finishing with the third highest points total ever (97) in Premier League history, Liverpool lost the title to Manchester City.  Only their win in the UEFA Champions League Final saved their season from feeling like a total let down.

Out of the big six, Liverpool are the ones who’ve done virtually nothing in the market. In fact, Liverpool spent the least amount of money of ANY Premier League side this summer. That feels like a massive lost opportunity, especially with City strengthening further.

Despite their inactivity, though, Liverpool have retained their European-winning squad. They have the best XI in the league behind Manchester City. They’ll be deeper this season too with guys like Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returning from injuries.

The one real question surrounding this team is whether they can replicate the unbelievable run they went on last year. Even if they fall off just a bit, this team figures to be in the fight for the title until the final days of the season. They’re the second most talented team in Europe right now.

Manchester City

David Crook previewed Manchester City’s season here. I’ll be brief on touching on the team now.

Manchester City have only gotten better this summer. Three of their biggest weaknesses, from a depth and quality perspective, they addressed in the market. They lost no crucial players this summer either, besides their captain, Vincent Kompany (and it appears Leroy Sane to an ACL tear).

City are the best team in Europe. This team has, arguably, 10-15 of the best players in the world on their team. Unless their lack of depth at center-back hurts them, it’s difficult envisioning this team doing anything either than three-peating as Premier League Champions next May.

Tottenham Hotspur

The final team to appear on this list is Tottenham.

Spurs have done very well to build on an already elite squad this summer. Spurs bought one of the most promising midfielders in the world in Tanguy Ndombele. They also landed extremely promising winger, Ryan Sessegnon, and got swiss-army knife Giovanni Lo Celso, on loan. Both significantly strength their forward line and midfield.

Overall, this team has no obvious weakness whatsoever. They have one of the best strikers in the world in Harry Kane. Lucas Moura, Heung-Min Son, Ryan Sessegnon, and Eric Lamela are good options on the wing. Their midfield of Dele Alli, Christian Erickson, Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, and Victor Wanyama is flawless. They also boast one of the best back-lines in the world with Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Serge Aurier.

Spurs are a real threat for the Premier League title this season. A legitimate argument could be made that they’ve surpassed Liverpool given the business that they’ve done. Look for them to make a major push for silverware this season.
