Of course there was the move of multiple players from City to United in the early 1900’s. Billy Meredith was one, Sandy Turnbull another. Meredith did return to City though towards the end of his career.

Denis Law did similar. Starting out at City he moved to the red half, where he spent a decade. A sign of the typical United fan came upon his return to City, and that famous back-heel.

Delivering five trophies, including a European cup, in his time with the Reds. His first season back at the blues, and his goal is regarded as the one which relegated his old side. In truth, even without that goal United were down thanks to results from other games. A pitch invasion ensued, I guess in an attempt to get the game called off? In any case he finished his career in Manchester that season, probably that day to be fair.

Other, more recent names you might remember, Carlos Tevez (pictured) and Owen Hargreaves. Going further back into recent history you have Andrei Kanchelskis, Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole. Tony Coton went the other way, and went from first choice City keeper to third choice.

My opinion on that particular move has changed over the years. Made a villain by the City faithful at the time it now seems maybe our own Chairman had something to do with the process. Obviously he signed off on the deal, but it has come to light that, as a member of the FA, he also blocked Coton from England senior appearances, due to a clause in the contract which meant paying out more money. If that’s true, then I can see why there was a little bitterness towards the club.

Finally, our very own Brian Kidd. Done everything for both clubs in Manchester. Played, managed (temporarily) and been on the coaching staff for either one, or both, during his career.
