The last minute win on Tuesday night papered over some glaring cracks. The lack of width in the game has seen City revert back to the same slow build up.
Sideways and backwards passing from the back is frustrating for both fans and, by looking at the sideline, Pep also.
Vincent Kompany was particularly frustrating at the back in this respect. It wasn’t too long ago that you wouldn’t have dreamed of saying this, but I think we missed John Stones as Otamendi’s defensive partner.
The question is, when Stones comes back, will he partner Otamendi once more, or would Kompany be there next to the Englishman.
For me Stones could very well be a future Manchester City captain and, when fit, is probably the first name on that team sheet when thinking about defensive positions.
